The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has debunked claims that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, made insensitive remarks regarding the recent tragic incident in Yelwata, Benue State.
The director, Defence Information Brigadier General Tukur Gusau in a statement issued to Defence correspondents in Abuja said, the military leadership described the claims as misleading and a gross misrepresentation of the CDS’s comments, particularly by a group identified as the National Coalition Against Mass Killings and Impunity (NCAMKI).
DHQ said General Musa’s remarks were taken out of context and did not, in any way, imply blaming the victims or justifying the criminal attacks that claimed lives in Yelwata or elsewhere in the country.
“The interpretation and portrayal of the CDS’s comments by NCAMKI are both misleading and taken out of context.
“At no point did the CDS intend to blame victims or justify the heinous acts perpetrated by criminal elements in Benue State or any other part of the country”, the statement read.
The Defence Headquarters explained that the CDS’s comments were intended to highlight the complex and evolving challenges faced in conflict zones, including the tactics employed by insurgent and criminal groups who often exploit communities’ vulnerabilities.
Musa, according to the statement, urged communities to be vigilant, cooperate with security forces, and remain united against forces threatening national peace and security.
His position was described as one of concern, rooted in a commitment to strengthening civil-military cooperation.
“It is regrettable that advocacy groups would twist the narrative and attempt to politicize an issue as sensitive as national security,” the military stated.
It added that Musa has consistently demonstrated professionalism, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to protecting all Nigerians, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or gender.
The DHQ also condemned what it called “reckless and provocative” attempts to paint the CDS’s remarks as insensitive, warning that such distortions undermine the military’s ongoing efforts in managing volatile security challenges across the country.
“While we acknowledge the right of citizens and advocacy groups to express concerns, we call on all stakeholders to verify facts and engage constructively.
“Inflammatory statements do nothing but escalate tensions and erode public confidence in national institutions”, the statement added.
Reaffirming its dedication to peace and accountability, the military pledged continued collaboration with communities, civil society organisations, and government agencies to restore security and justice across Nigeria.
