The Ministry of Defence has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died on Sunday in a London clinic.
In a condolence letter signed by the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, H.E. Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, CON, the Ministry described the late President as a symbol of integrity, discipline, and unwavering patriotism.
“On behalf of the Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Armed Forces, I express our profound sorrow on the demise of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR,” Matawalle stated.
He noted that the late statesman served the country meritoriously in various capacities—first as a soldier, then as Military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.
“His legacy of honour, integrity, patriotism, and national service is firmly etched in the annals of Nigeria’s history,” the Minister said, adding that “his life was defined by an unshakeable belief in the unity and progress of Nigeria.”
The Ministry described Buhari’s life as a testament to selfless public service, pointing out that many Nigerians saw in him a role model and a champion of national interest.
While extending condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Buhari family, the Government, and the Nigerian people, Dr. Matawalle prayed for the peaceful repose of the late President’s soul.
“May Allah grant him Aljanatul Firdaus,” he added.
