President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named Mrs. Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), underscoring his administration’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and a green economic future for Nigeria.
Majekodunmi takes over from Dr. Nkiruka Madueke, the Council’s inaugural DG, who was appointed in June 2024 and is praised for establishing a solid institutional framework during her tenure.
A distinguished climate finance expert and environmental lawyer, Majekodunmi brings over 17 years of expertise in climate policy, finance, and regulation. Prior to this appointment, she served as the Council’s Financial Adviser, where she was instrumental in developing Nigeria’s green finance strategy.
The appointment was officially announced on Thursday through a statement by Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
“Majekodunmi’s appointment reaffirms the Tinubu administration’s commitment to climate action not just as an environmental imperative, but as a catalyst for inclusive economic growth, national security, and sustainable development,” the statement noted.
President Tinubu also extended gratitude to Dr. Madueke for her service and the foundational progress achieved under her leadership.
Created under the Climate Change Act of 2021, the NCCC serves as Nigeria’s leading institution for coordinating national climate efforts. Its mandate includes overseeing climate policy implementation, managing the national carbon budget, and mobilizing green finance for development.
With Majekodunmi at the helm, the Council is expected to intensify efforts to establish Nigeria as a regional leader in climate action and green innovation.
