Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, on Monday inaugurated 17 new commissioners, urging them to demonstrate loyalty, discipline, and grassroots commitment in their service to the state.
Speaking at the Old Banquet Hall of Government House, Makurdi, the governor described the appointees as carefully selected from across the state to drive his administration’s development agenda.
“We are in the second half of our first term, and the journey ahead is even longer,” Alia said. “Out of the many, you were chosen today because you understand governance, transparency, accountability, and discipline. To whom much is given, much is expected.”
The governor tasked the commissioners to remain close to their communities, serve as spokespersons for government programs, and maintain confidentiality in state matters. He reminded them of their oath of office, stressing the need to uphold the Nigerian Constitution without fear or favor.
Alia emphasized that his administration was focused on people-centered development rather than patronage politics. “This administration is not about squatting and sharing money,” he said. “It is about progress, growth, and putting something in the pockets of market women and in the lives of children who may not even know I am their governor.”
On the sidelines of the swearing-in, Governor Alia also addressed recent speculations regarding his deputy, Dr. Sam Ode, Mni. He firmly dismissed reports suggesting plans to replace Ode ahead of the 2027 elections, describing him as a dependable partner.
“There is no vacancy for any deputy governor,” Alia declared. “I have a very good deputy who understands governance, is people-oriented, and very cerebral. He is capable, tested, and has all it takes to perform his functions. I love working with him and enjoy a personal relationship with him.”
Responding on behalf of the commissioners, Hon. Dennis Iyaighgba thanked the governor for the confidence reposed in them, assuring that they would justify the trust through innovation, diligence, and integrity.
“We are not here to merely occupy positions but to provide value addition and ensure tangible results that improve the lives of our people,” Iyaighgba said.
