The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has said it is investigating the alleged brutality of Seaman Abbas Haruna and unjust incarceration for six years.
Human Rights Radio had aired disturbing allegations by Seaman Abbas’s wife chronicling alleged brutality and inhuman treatment meted to Seaman Abbas by a superior officer.
But reacting to the video which went viral, the Director Defence Information Brigadier General Tukur Gusau assured the public that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain committed to upholding justice, fairness, and the rule of law.
The statement said the DHQ has taken note of a circulating video clip alleging the unjust incarceration of a Naval rating, Seaman Abbas Haruna, for six years.
According to the statement “the military court-martial process, though meticulous, ensures fairness, equal opportunity, and justice in accordance with established military procedures and the law.”
The statement quoted the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, to have said he has “directed an immediate investigation into the matter.”
He also assured Nigerians that the outcome of the investigation will be made public in due course.
“The DHQ urges the general public to exercise caution and refrain from spreading unsubstantiated information while the investigation is ongoing.
“We assure Nigerians that the Armed Forces will ensure a speedy and transparent investigation” the statement added.
