The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, has inaugurated a newly renovated office complex at the Tincan Island Port Command, marking a significant milestone in the command’s history.
Speaking at the ceremony on Tuesday, 26 November 2024, the CGC expressed satisfaction with the project, attributing its success to collaboration with various government agencies and stakeholders.
“We have created an environment that fosters effective collaboration with other government agencies,” he said. “What I see today is the result of teamwork. Our stakeholders have stepped forward to help improve our workspace, demonstrating that collaboration truly pays.”
The CGC further stressed the importance of teamwork in delivering better services to the nation. “We will continue to expand the scope of collaboration, not just in infrastructure, but also in operations, to enhance our service delivery.”
In his welcome address, the Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the command, Comptroller Dera Nnadi, noted the significance of the renovation. He highlighted that since the command’s establishment in 1977, no major updates had been made to modernise the office complex.
“This renovation transcends aesthetics or infrastructure upgrades,” Nnadi said. “It aligns with the CGC’s focus on Collaboration, Consolidation, and Innovation. It reaffirms our commitment to improving working conditions, boosting operational efficiency, and creating a conducive environment for officers and stakeholders.”
The event also honoured Comptroller James Brigue (Rtd), the first substantive Area Administrator of the command (1982–1984). The CGC urged officers to emulate Brigue’s legacy, emphasising the importance of dedicated service and leaving a lasting impact.
In another related development, the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, has inaugurated a state-of-the-art sports arena at the Murtala Muhammed Area Command (MMAC) to enhance the physical and mental well-being of customs officers.
The multi-purpose court was officially unveiled on Tuesday, 26 November 2024.
Speaking at the event, the CGC expressed his delight at having the arena named in his honour. He commended the Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Michael Awe, and his team for their initiative, as well as stakeholders whose support and generosity made the project possible.
The CGC remarked, “Everywhere we go, we must strive to leave it better than we found it, and this is exactly what Awe has done. The quarter guard post, which has remained in its position since Comptroller Awe joined the Service in 1990, has now been upgraded thanks to his vision and resourcefulness. It is highly commendable.”
Comptroller Awe, in his address, described the arena as a symbol of unity, wellness, and progress. “This facility will be a vital resource for recreation, fitness, and camaraderie, enhancing both individual and organisational effectiveness,” he stated.
The inauguration ceremony included a physical exercise session, underscoring the Service’s commitment to fostering a healthy work-life balance.
The CGC also highlighted the importance of physical fitness for customs officers, noting the demands of their role. “Physical fitness is crucial to our work. We must remain fit to handle the challenges of our job, as physical fitness directly supports mental resilience.”
He encouraged personnel and stakeholders to utilise the new facility for competitions and activities that promote healthy living and teamwork.
