For years, Benue people have been told to “vote wisely.” We have voted, trusted, hoped and waited, yet many of the same challenges continue to

confront our people, insecurity, unemployment, poverty, weak infrastructure, struggling healthcare and limited opportunities for our youths. Perhaps it is time to rethink what we have always called “voting wisely.”

Prof. Sebastine Hon, SAN, the Sema Wan U Tiv, has placed before Benue a different proposition: secure the people, rebuild the economy, empower the youth, include women, strengthen institutions and restore confidence in governance. His proposed agenda speaks directly to the realities of our farmers, young people, women, businesses and vulnerable communities.

Imagine a Benue where farmers can return to their farms without fear, where agricultural produce is processed locally instead of leaving the state as raw materials, where youths acquire skills, access opportunities and become employers, where women have meaningful participation in leadership and economic development, where healthcare is accessible and infrastructure connects communities to markets and opportunities.

His legal pedigree also places justice and the rule of law at the centre of his public vision. Benue needs institutions that work, government that respects constitutional boundaries and leadership that understands that public office is a responsibility, not a personal entitlement.

We cannot keep changing the calendar while repeating the same political calculations and expecting a different outcome. The 2027 conversation should be about records, competence, character, ideas and the capacity to deliver. Prof. Hon, SAN, has presented himself and his vision for consideration.

Perhaps this time, the wisest thing is not to simply say “vote wisely,” but to examine every choice honestly, reject complacency and demand a new standard of leadership. The future of Benue is too important to be reduced to slogans.
