NILOWV @30: CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT, DEMOCRACY AND LEADERSHIP
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

For 30 years, the League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV) has been part of the journey to build a Nigeria where women’s voices matter, their leadership is valued, and their contributions to democracy and national development are recognised. This October, the organisation celebrates this remarkable milestone with a series of activities from 26th to 30th October 2026 in Abuja, under the theme: “Thirty Years Strong: Empowering Women’s Voice, Leadership & Democratic Participation — Celebrating the Past, Shaping the Future.”

Beyond the 30th anniversary is a moment to reflect on the struggles, sacrifices, achievements and progress that have shaped NILOWV’s journey, honour the women and partners who have remained committed to its vision, and look ahead with renewed hope and determination.

Over the years, NILOWV has worked to encourage women to participate actively in elections, take up leadership positions, engage in governance and contribute to decisions that affect their lives and communities. Through voter education, advocacy, grassroots mobilisation and partnerships, the organisation has continued to champion a more inclusive democratic process in Nigeria.

A key part of this work is NILOWV’s sustained advocacy for the Special Seats Bill for Women, a proposed constitutional reform aimed at improving women’s representation in legislative institutions. Through engagements with lawmakers, constituency rallies, public enlightenment and grassroots campaigns, NILOWV continues to call for meaningful action to address the longstanding underrepresentation of women in elective political offices.

A WEEK OF CELEBRATION, REFLECTION AND RENEWED COMMITMENT

The NILOWV @30 celebration will bring together women leaders, government officials, policymakers, development partners, civil society organisations, members of the diplomatic community, young people and other friends of the organisation to celebrate its achievements and discuss the future of women’s leadership in Nigeria.

The week’s programme will feature the following activities:

Monday, 26th October 2026 – Anniversary Engagements and Gatherings

The celebration will begin with anniversary engagements and opportunities for members, national and state leaders, partners and invited guests to reconnect, reflect on the organisation’s journey and prepare for the days ahead.

Tuesday, 27th October 2026 – All Women’s Conference

The All Women’s Conference will bring women from different backgrounds and sectors together to discuss the issues that matter most to women’s advancement. Conversations will focus on leadership, political participation, gender equality and practical ways to ensure that more women have a seat at the decision-making table.

Wednesday, 28th October 2026 – Old School Hangout

With the theme “Thirty Years Strong, Forever Young!”, the Old School Hangout promises a lively and memorable gathering filled with music, fashion, culture and nostalgia. It will offer members and friends of NILOWV an opportunity to celebrate enduring friendships, share memories and enjoy the spirit of togetherness that has sustained the organisation over the years.

Thursday, 29th October 2026 – Multistakeholder Summit and Policy Engagements

The multistakeholder summit will provide a platform for government representatives, civil society organisations, development partners, the diplomatic community and the private sector to exchange ideas and explore practical solutions for advancing women’s leadership, strengthening democratic participation and promoting inclusive governance.

Friday, 30th October 2026 – Gala and Awards Night

The week will culminate in a Gala and Awards Night celebrating NILOWV’s 30-year journey and recognising individuals and institutions whose contributions have helped advance women’s empowerment, democracy, gender equality and national development. It will be an evening of appreciation, inspiration and renewed commitment to the cause of women’s leadership.

Other highlights of the anniversary will include the 30 Years Impact Exhibition, which will showcase NILOWV’s journey, milestones and contributions over the years, alongside opportunities to recognise outstanding advocates, build partnerships and explore initiatives that will sustain the organisation’s impact for generations to come.

LOOKING BACK WITH PRIDE, MOVING FORWARD WITH PURPOSE

The President of NILOWV, Hon. Irene Mngunengen Awunah-Ikyegh, has reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to building on its achievements and creating greater opportunities for women and girls across Nigeria.

The anniversary offers an opportunity to celebrate how far the organisation has come while acknowledging that much work remains to be done. It is also a call to the next generation of women leaders to find their voices, step forward with confidence and play an active role in shaping the country’s future.

As NILOWV marks this important milestone, it invites government institutions, development partners, diplomatic missions, the private sector, civil society organisations, the media, traditional and religious leaders, and Nigerians at home and abroad to join in celebrating three decades of impact and supporting the next chapter of its journey.

The message is clear: women’s participation is essential to a stronger democracy, and a more inclusive Nigeria requires the voices, ideas and leadership of women at every level.

Thirty Years Strong. Forever Young. Shaping the Future!

TOGETHER WE CAN! YES, WE CAN!
