Nigerians will pay more for calls and data subscriptions as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a 50 percent tariff adjustment for telecom operators, citing rising operational costs and the need to sustain the industry.
The NCC announced the approval in a statement on Monday.
The approved adjustment 50 percent lower than the over 100 percent increase requested by some network providers.
Recall at the last Economic Summit Group Conference held last year, the telecoms operators called for the review of tariff because of naira devaluation and high operating costs.
According to the NCC, the adjustment aligns with its mandate under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, to regulate and approve tariff rates.
The new tariffs will remain within the 2013 tariff bands and will be implemented in line with the NCC’s 2024 Guidance on Tariff Simplification.
Despite the increment, the NCC said that it will continue to protect consumers remains a priority.
