The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), OFR, has emphasised national unity as a critical solution to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges, describing it as a strategic force multiplier in safeguarding peace and stability across the country.

The Minister made the remarks on Saturday at the Army Headquarters Departments and Commands West African Social Activities (WASA) 2025, held at the Army Headquarters Garrison Parade Ground, Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja.

He was represented at the event by Major General Henry Wesley (Rtd), Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties.

According to him, the Nigerian Army remains a microcosm of the Nigerian state, where ethnic, cultural and religious diversity converge under a shared national identity. He noted that at a time of complex and dynamic security threats, unity stands as Nigeria’s most potent asset in preserving national cohesion and security.

He commended the Nigerian Army for demonstrating discipline, professionalism and patriotism, stressing that diversity, when effectively harnessed, becomes a strength rather than a fault line. The Minister praised the Service for its steadfast role in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, supporting civil authorities, upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens nationwide.

The Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, who served as Chief Host, described WASA as more than a cultural celebration, noting that it is a deliberate morale-building and unifying initiative embedded in the “Robust Administration” pillar of his Command Philosophy.
He explained that fostering esprit de corps, inclusiveness and shared identity among personnel directly enhances operational effectiveness.

The Army Chief further disclosed that deliberate welfare policies, institutional reforms and strengthened support systems are being implemented to institutionalise the “Soldier First Culture,” ensuring troops remain motivated, combat-ready and resilient, while their families receive adequate support.
Reaffirming the Army’s commitment to addressing contemporary security threats, the COAS pledged continued collaboration with sister services and other security agencies to consolidate operational gains and restore lasting peace nationwide.

He also expressed appreciation to President and Commander-in-Chief, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff for their strategic guidance and sustained support.

In his welcome address, the Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, Major General Maxwell Dangana, described WASA as a vital platform for strengthening bonds among officers, soldiers and their families. He noted that celebrating Nigeria’s diverse cultural heritage through traditional dances and performances reinforces mutual respect, shared identity and national cohesion — values critical to overcoming security challenges.

He added that the Army Headquarters Departments and Commands recorded significant operational, administrative and logistics achievements in 2025, alongside sustained training activities aligned with the Chief of Army Staff’s directives and the Nigerian Army’s operational priorities.

As the Service moves into 2026, he assured the Army leadership of continued dedication, discipline and responsiveness in service to the nation.

The colourful event featured traditional cultural displays, the beating of the retreat and the ceremonial lighting of the bonfire symbolising unity, continuity and collective resolve in defence of Nigeria.
