The Headquarters Theatre Command of Operation HADIN KAI has confirmed that it is investigating reports surrounding the death of Abdulrahman Mustapha, also referred to as Abchin, allegedly shot by military personnel on 22 March 2026 near the Federal High Court in Maiduguri.

Social media posts have labeled the incident an extrajudicial killing, raising concerns over constitutional rights, transparency, and the handling of the deceased, while demanding independent investigation, accountability, and compensation.

In an official statement, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), explained that the Theatre Command treats the allegations with utmost seriousness and has initiated processes to establish the full facts.

Preliminary operational indicators suggest the incident may involve underlying security implications rather than being straightforward.

Early reports indicate that the individual allegedly attempted to snatch a soldier’s rifle, an act described as hostile and posing a direct threat to troops’ safety. Mustapha was reportedly found with multiple identification cards, including one from the Niger Republic, as well as a bottle of Tutolin Syrup and suspected Cannabis Sativa.

He was also said to be in the company of two unidentified women who fled the scene, potentially indicating accomplices. Eyewitnesses reportedly observed suspicious behaviour prior to the incident, prompting a distress call to the nearest military post.

Lieutenant Colonel Uba emphasised that these preliminary details remain subject to verification and should not be considered definitive. A comprehensive and impartial investigation is ongoing to determine the sequence of events, actions of all parties, and adherence to the Rules of Engagement and operational procedures.

The Theatre Command has directed all relevant units of Operation HADIN KAI to intensify efforts to locate and apprehend the fleeing individuals, whose information may be critical to ongoing security operations.

Operation HADIN KAI reaffirmed its commitment to the highest standards of professionalism, accountability, and protection of human rights, while continuing to safeguard lives and maintain security within the North East.
