The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports of an alleged attack on the residence of Bishop Matthew Kukah and the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral, describing the claims as false and misleading.
The Army said the report, which circulated on social media, was intended to create panic among residents.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba.
Osoba said the attention of the Division was drawn to a Facebook post alleging an armed attack on the cleric and the cathedral.
He described the report as unfounded and without any basis.
According to him, there was no such attack in Sokoto State.
He assured that Bishop Kukah remains safe and is carrying out his Easter duties without any disruption.
Osoba also confirmed that the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral is secure.
He said security agencies have maintained a strong presence across the state.
According to him, the Army is working closely with other security agencies to ensure public safety.
Osoba stated that robust security measures have been put in place across the Division’s area of responsibility.
He added that the measures are aimed at ensuring a peaceful Easter celebration.
He urged the public to disregard the false report and avoid spreading unverified information.
Osoba also called on residents to rely on credible sources for information.
