The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has inaugurated a General Court Martial to try 36 serving military personnel over alleged mutiny linked to an attempt to overthrow the government.

According to a statement by the Director, Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the inauguration, held on 24 April 2026, represents a decisive move by the military high command to reinforce discipline, accountability, and its commitment to safeguarding national integrity and constituted authority.

The statement noted that the action is in furtherance of an earlier DHQ communication issued on 26 January 2026 addressing the matter. It emphasised that proceedings of the court martial will be conducted with the highest standards of fairness, impartiality, and strict adherence to due process.

Major General Uba assured that all cases will be handled within the extant legal frameworks guiding the military justice system, guaranteeing that justice will be administered without fear or favour.

The Defence Headquarters reaffirmed its resolve to uphold professionalism, discipline, and the rule of law, while ensuring that the rights of all personnel are protected and the principles of fair hearing strictly observed.
