The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), Dr. Olufemi Ogunyemi, has revealed his long-standing connection with journalism while receiving an Award of Exemplary Leadership Qualities in Public Service from the Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE).

Speaking during the presentation ceremony on Thursday, Ogunyemi disclosed that before his appointment as NEPZA boss by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, he worked as a columnist and contributor for veteran journalist Sam Amuka’s publication for about three years.

“Most people don’t know that before the President appointed me here, I was writing articles for Sam Amuka. For three years, if you Google ‘The Pain Doctor’, I had a column there every week,” he said.

The NEPZA boss said his media background helped him understand the strategic importance of journalism and public communication, especially in promoting government institutions and national development.

According to him, when he assumed office at NEPZA three years ago, the agency had over 63 free trade zones, about 700 enterprises operating within them, and nearly 600 staff members spread across the country, yet many Nigerians knew little about the agency’s contributions to the economy.

“When I joined NEPZA three years ago, these zones were doing a lot of great work for the country, but the public did not know about it. I knew we needed to bring the media closer,” Ogunyemi stated.

He commended members of the media for helping to improve public awareness about NEPZA’s activities and the economic importance of free trade zones in Nigeria.

The award was presented by the Chairman of the Association of Corporate Online Editors, Mr. Shola Akingboye, who praised Ogunyemi for his visionary leadership, integrity, and commitment to public service.

“It is a great honour to present this Award of Exemplary Leadership Qualities in Public Service to our esteemed Chief Executive Officer,” Akinboloye said.

He noted that the recognition was a postdated presentation following Ogunyemi’s absence during the association’s investiture ceremony held in November last year.

According to Akingboye, Ogunyemi has distinguished himself through exceptional management of NEPZA and sustained efforts toward the development of free trade zones, contributing significantly to economic growth, investment opportunities, and national development.

“You have consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership through dedication, integrity, and a forward-thinking approach to public service,” he added.

Responding to the recognition, Ogunyemi said although he often declines awards due to his demanding schedule, he decided to personally receive the honour because of the credibility of the association and his appreciation of the media profession.

“I’m taking this very seriously, and that is why I’m here. I pray that we continue to work together to improve our country,” he said.
