The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Tuesday, 30 June 2026, commissioned 80 housing units under the Nigerian Army Affordable Home Ownership Scheme in Jos, Plateau State, reaffirming his commitment to the Soldier-First Culture as a strategic enabler of operational effectiveness and national security.
He stated that providing quality and affordable housing for personnel is a deliberate investment in the welfare, morale and combat readiness of soldiers who continue to make immense sacrifices in defence of Nigeria.
General Shaibu emphasized that the welfare of personnel and their families remains a central pillar of his command philosophy, noting that a well-motivated and professionally fulfilled soldier is better positioned to deliver on the constitutional mandate of the Nigerian Army.
He disclosed that, in addition to the 80 housing units commissioned in Jos, 60 units were delivered last year, while another 120 and 40 units are scheduled for commissioning in Abuja and Benin respectively, reflecting the sustained commitment of the Nigerian Army to improving the living standards of its personnel.
In a demonstration of the Army’s enduring commitment to those who have paid a heavy price in service to the nation, General Shaibu announced that five percent of the housing units have been reserved for soldiers wounded in action.
The COAS described the gesture as a mark of gratitude to gallant personnel whose courage and sacrifices continue to safeguard Nigeria’s sovereignty, peace and security.
He urged beneficiaries to preserve and maintain the facilities, describing home ownership as a symbol of stability, responsibility and lasting reward for dedicated service.
Earlier, the Managing Director, Post-Service Housing Development Limited, Major General Isaiah Alison, commended the COAS for placing personnel welfare at the forefront of his leadership priorities and assured that additional housing projects are underway to benefit more soldiers across the country.
As part of the visit, Lieutenant General Shaibu also commissioned newly completed trainee hostels and convenience facilities at the 3 Division Training School, Jos, highlighting the holistic approach of the Nigerian Army to strengthening both personnel welfare and institutional capacity in support of enhanced operational readiness and the attainment of national security objectives.
