The Medical Department of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) conducted a health sensitisation and screening programme for employees at the Abuja Regional Office on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, as part of its ongoing commitment to promoting staff well-being.

The initiative, which is being implemented across TCN offices under Abuja Region, is designed to encourage preventive healthcare by educating employees on healthy living while providing medical screenings, including blood pressure, blood sugar and hepatitis tests among others.

During the sensitisation programme, Nurse Jenifer Akubuobi, Assistant Manager, Medicals, educated staff on the dangers of non-communicable diseases commonly referred to as “silent killers,” such as hypertension, diabetes and cancer. She explained that these conditions often develop without noticeable symptoms, underscoring the importance of routine medical check-ups for early detection and prompt intervention.

The team encouraged employees to make regular health screenings a priority, noting that early diagnosis significantly improves the effectiveness of treatment and long-term disease management. They explained that many health conditions only become symptomatic after they have reached advanced stages.

Employees who were referred for further medical evaluation were urged to ensure that they keep their appointment with the hospital. Those already receiving treatment for chronic health conditions were advised not to discontinue their prescribed medications simply because they feel better, as consistent adherence to treatment is essential for effective disease management.

The medical experts further highlighted the importance of adopting healthy lifestyle habits. They encouraged staff to maintain balanced diets, consume food prepared under hygienic conditions, engage in regular physical activity, while avoiding the indiscriminate use of unverified herbal concoctions.

They also drew attention to major risk factors associated with preventable diseases, including excessive consumption of salt and sugar, smoking and excessive alcohol intake. Employees were advised to practise moderation and make healthy lifestyle choices to reduce their risk of developing chronic health conditions.

The sensitisation programme forms part of TCN’s broader commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of its workforce through continuous health education and preventive healthcare initiatives.
