The Management of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has denied any link between the payment of a proposed levy by the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, and mobilisation for national service.
In a statement signed by the Director, Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the NYSC said its attention was drawn to a viral publication titled, _“NANS Moves to Collect N200 Levy from Nigerian Students, Links Dues to NYSC Mobilisation.”_
The Scheme stated unequivocally that it has not, at any time, discussed, agreed to, or entered into any Memorandum of Understanding (MoU, with NANS regarding the collection of any levy from students in connection with mobilisation.
“The NYSC operates under the authority of the Federal Government and implements only policies, guidelines and procedures duly approved by the appropriate government authorities,” the statement said.
The NYSC explained that the mobilisation process is straightforward and is conducted through established official channels, involving collaboration between NYSC Management and Heads of Corps Producing Institutions (CPIs, who provide information on their graduates for mobilisation.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the mobilisation process is neither linked to nor contingent upon the activities of any student association or organisation,” it added.
Consequently, the Scheme advised members of the public, particularly Prospective Corps Members and students, to disregard any information suggesting that payment of a levy to NANS or any other association is a requirement for NYSC mobilisation.
The NYSC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a transparent, credible and efficient mobilisation process in accordance with extant government policies and guidelines.
