The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, commissioned the Nigerian Army Welfare Limited by Guarantee (NAWLG) Luxury Estate in Yaba, Lagos.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, on 28 October 2026.
The COAS described the project as a significant milestone in promoting sustainable investment opportunities, encouraging home ownership and strengthening the long-term welfare of personnel. He noted that beyond its impressive structures, the estate represents a forward-looking investment model that brings together serving and retired personnel and civilian investors for quality housing and financial security.
General Shaibu said the significance of the project is underscored by the peculiar demands of military service. He explained that frequent postings and operational deployments often limit opportunities for permanent family residences, making transition to retirement challenging without adequate accommodation.
He therefore commended officers who demonstrated foresight by investing in the estate and urged all personnel to embrace prudent financial planning and early preparation for life after service, noting that home ownership provides stability and independence from service privileges.
The COAS lauded the deliberate mixed ownership structure of the estate which accommodates both military and civilian subscribers. He emphasized that the intention is not to create another barracks, but a modern, socially integrated and commercially sustainable community where military and civilian homeowners live together.
According to him, this model will enable retiring personnel to gradually integrate into wider society, build meaningful relationships beyond the regimented environment, and strengthen civil-military relations through everyday interaction and shared responsibilities.
General Shaibu further noted that the estate aligns with his Command Philosophy, particularly the pillar of Sound Administration, and complements his Soldier First Concept which links welfare, motivation and institutional effectiveness.
While affirming the Army’s commitment to providing accommodation for serving personnel, he stressed the need for legitimate personal investments that secure the future. He charged the management of NAWLG to sustain transparency, accountability, sound financial management and strict adherence to commercial and regulatory standards to protect all subscribers.
He expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his sustained strategic guidance and support to the Nigerian Army.
He also commended the NAWLG leadership, developers, consultants and investors for transforming the vision into reality and congratulated homeowners, praying the estate remains a place of comfort, peace and harmonious coexistence.
