The Nigerian Army has refuted reports alleging that troops of 245 Battalion were harassing residents of Ochon community in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State over a land dispute with Alesi community in Ikom LGA.
In a statement on Sunday, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division, Lt. Col. Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, described the reports as false, misleading, and an attempt to discredit the troops’ peacekeeping efforts.
“82 Division categorically refutes the allegation in its entirety. Our troops are deployed in the area strictly for internal security operations — to protect lives, safeguard critical infrastructure, and maintain peace in accordance with constitutional provisions,” Ayeni said.
He explained that soldiers only moved into the flashpoint communities following renewed clashes on 19th September, a response he described as swift and necessary to prevent further violence.
“The Division has no stake or interest in land ownership or disputes between Alesi and Ochon or any other communities. Our mandate is solely to restore peace and forestall a breakdown of law and order that could endanger lives and property,” the Army spokesman stressed.
Ayeni reassured residents of the affected areas that troops under 82 Division remain professional, disciplined, and committed to respecting human rights at all times.
“We urge community leaders and stakeholders to embrace lawful and peaceful avenues to resolve their differences. The public should disregard false reports designed to undermine our peace-support operations,” he added.
The Division also encouraged members of the public to report credible cases of misconduct through established Army channels for prompt action, while reaffirming readiness to work with other security agencies, civil authorities, and traditional institutions to ensure lasting peace across Cross River State.
