The President’s message was delivered by the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, during the 60th Memorial Celebration held in Umuahia, Abia State, on July 29, 2026, to commemorate the legacy of the late General six decades after his passing.

Delivering the memorial address on behalf of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Minister of Defence noted that General Aguiyi-Ironsi distinguished himself as an outstanding professional soldier whose military career was defined by loyalty and unwavering commitment to duty.

“General Aguiyi-Ironsi rose through the ranks to become the first Nigerian General Officer Commanding in the Nigerian Army and subsequently Nigeria’s First Military Head of State during one of the most critical periods in our national history,” President Tinubu stated through the Minister.

“Although his tenure was brief, he demonstrated a firm commitment to preserving national unity, restoring stability, and maintaining the integrity of the Nigerian state. He understood that leadership demands sacrifice, placing the interest of the nation above personal considerations.”

Reaffirming the administration’s commitment to national security and democratic institutions, the President stressed that the values exemplified by the late General remain essential for contemporary nation-building.

“The Federal Government remains resolute in its commitment to preserving the unity of Nigeria and strengthening the institutions that safeguard our democracy. Our diversity remains one of our greatest strengths, and it is through mutual respect, tolerance, justice, and shared purpose that we will continue to build a peaceful and prosperous nation,” he said.

The President, through the Minister of Defence, conveyed the heartfelt sympathy and enduring gratitude of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the family of the late General.

He commended the organizers for sustaining the tradition of remembrance, emphasizing that preserving the memories of past national heroes strengthens the collective values that define Nigeria.

The event concluded with prayers for the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Aguiyi-Ironsi family, and for the continued peace and prosperity of the nation.

Also speaking at the solemn commemoration, former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, reflected on the historical significance of General Aguiyi-Ironsi’s contributions to the Nigerian military and the nation’s political evolution.

“General Aguiyi-Ironsi was a fine officer and a patriot who found himself at the helm during a turbulent storm in our national journey,” Chief Obasanjo remarked.

“Sixty years after, his memory reminds us that the unity of Nigeria was bought with significant sacrifice. We must honour his memory not just with words, but by ensuring that the peace, cohesion, and institutional integrity of our Armed Forces are zealously guarded by every generation.”

Hosting the national and state dignitaries, the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, expressed deep appreciation to the Federal Government, the military high command, and elder statesmen for gathering in Umuahia to honour one of Abia’s most illustrious sons.

The Governor said Abia State remains proud of his legendary courage and his supreme sacrifice for national unity, adding that his legacy continues to inspire his administration’s commitment to good governance, justice, and building bridges across every section of the country.

Other dignitaries at the event included former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika (Rtd), along with a host of serving and retired members of the Armed Forces, the legislature and traditional institution.
